Emily Adkins, Class of 2016 Greenon Alum, has been named a recipient of the prestigious sHERO Award from LexisNexis, an honor recognizing women who demonstrate resilience, leadership, volunteerism, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in their communities.
In her own words, the sHERO Award represents “volunteering for my community, overcoming great challenges in my life, and being a shining smile in my community.” Emily embodies all those qualities through both her personal journey and her service to others.
Receiving the award came as a complete surprise. Emily shared that she had no idea she had been nominated. “Being picked was a great shock. I couldn’t have been prouder of myself. I have come a long way in life,” she said. Being selected as one of only 15 recipients across North America and the United Kingdom makes the recognition even more exciting.
Emily’s journey has not been without challenges. Once a student who faced bullying, she has grown into a confident leader and advocate who now uses her story to inspire others. Her advice to young women is simple yet powerful: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Don’t let anything hold you back from your dreams. Believe in yourself and make time for what matters to you.”
Much of Emily’s heart for service stems from her own experience as a wish recipient. Today, she gives back through extensive volunteer work with Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana (OKI) as both a Discovery and Fulfillment Volunteer. In these roles, she helps plan and bring wishes to life. She has assisted with shopping sprees, to bedroom makeovers, to outdoor space transformations and travel baskets. As a Discovery Volunteer, she meets directly with families and wish children to help imagine and shape their dream wish experiences.
She is also involved with the Special Wish Foundation, Heroes vs. Breast Cancer, and various volunteer initiatives through her workplace.
Emily’s story is one of service and heart. Through her advocacy and volunteerism, she continues to be exactly what the award celebrates, a true sHERO.
