Greenon FFA's Copper Chaffin, Maren Gilbreth, Senator Hackett, Lexi Lusk, Ali Rairden and Blake Potter at the Ohio Legislative Leadership Conference.FFA members and State Officers were given the opportunity to attend Ohio Legislative Leadership Conference (OLLC) on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
OLLC is held at the State House in Columbus and gave attendees the opportunity tour the building and take photos in between the workshop and lunch. Representing Greenon were Cooper Chaffin, Maren Gilbreth, Lexi Lusk, Blake Potter, and Ali Rairden.
At OLLC, students learned what lobbyist and legislatures do. Students participated in a mock exercise where half were lobbyist and had to sell a pitch to the Representatives.
“I learned a lot about our government and how ideas and bills are proposed,” said Blake Potter. “It was really fun to meet new people and see the State House.”
The representatives corresponded to 12 districts and would decide whether to support the bill based on their communities and demographics. After the exercise, a Speaker of the House led a discussion and debate on the different bills.
After the workshop, the Greenon FFA members met with Greenon Graduate and former FFA member Clark Siddle, who works for the Senate Majority Caucus Communications. Clark talked to the students about his job and his experience in the FFA. Senator Bob Hackett attended the conference and spoke to one of our members during lunch about his job and how he became a Senator. Overall the conference was a success and Greenon FFA members look forward to attending next year.
