Ohio Enforcement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
The Ohio Department of Education soon will make changes in the way it monitors, enforces and publicizes Ohio school districts’ compliance with the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which ensures a free, appropriate public education to students with disabilities. The actions result from the partial settlement of a class action lawsuit. For details, read the legal consent order and related public notice.

Notice: School districts throughout Ohio are participating in an effort to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with handicaps, birth through age 21. By handicap, we mean conditions such as; multi-handicapped, hearing handicapped, visually handicapped, orthopedically and/or other health handicap, severe behavior handicapped, developmentally handicapped, specific learning disabled, or speech and language handicapped.

Many children with handicaps are not visible because they do not function in the mainstream of the community. Also, many unidentified children with handicaps are preschoolers. Parents may not be aware that programs and services are available.
